Faux Barnwood Key Holder-At Home with The Barkers

Barnwood is so trendy right now…funny considering that it’s old, worn out and been around forever!  In general, barnwood doesn’t fit in with most of my home decor but when I saw this new scrapbook paper at Hobby Lobby, I knew I had to use it!  Almost immediately I knew what I would do with it…make a faux barnwood key holder!

I really hate digging around for keys and I’m sure I am not the only one!  Even placing them in a basket where they were altogether didn’t help.  Every time we needed a key the dig happened.  I wanted to make the key holder so that all of the smaller keys would be seen much easier and take some of the stress out of something as simple as looking for a key.

After I had purchased the paper I was looking for wood for my DIY monogram flag and I new the same wood plaque would be perfect for this project as well.  I bought the smaller one for $4.97 because that was the perfect size for my faux barnwood key holder.  I picked it up at Wal-mart.  The barn owl in the picture of supplies ended up not being used in the project but he sure is cute!

I cut the scrapbook paper to size and used Mod Podge to stick it down.  Then I used some acrylic paints that would give the sides a wood effect.  After the paint had dried I covered the front of the paper with Mod Podge.  This adds a protective coat across the paper.  It does go on white but dries to a clear finish.

I purchased these metal hooks also while I was at Wal-mart.  I lined them up to get an idea of how many I could fit on the key holder.  Then I used my Ryobi drill to pre-drill holes.  I didn’t want to take a chance of tearing my barnwood paper plus the pre-drilled holes allow me to twist the hooks in a little easier.

This faux barnwood key holder project turned out so cute I’m thinking maybe I do need more barnwood in my home.  I wonder where else I could use it!  This was an easy project that didn’t take much time at all.

This faux barnwood paper came in a natural finish, white and green.  So there were options to match lots of decor options.

I hope you have a great day,

  1. Cute. Our Hobby Lobby also had red. You could make cute little jewelry hangers.
