One Room Challenge Family Room Week One

Here I go again…I can’t help myself. I’m joining in with the One Room Challenge Fall 2016 fun!

If you are new to my blog, welcome, I’m so happy you stopped by to visit. My name is Sonya and I love inspiring others to create the home they love. I share DIY tutorials, decorating ideas, styling tips and much more. I hope you stick around to see how my ORC family room makeover comes together.

For my long time readers, hey friends!

I have joined the ORC challenge in the past by completing our Shed Makeover this past spring and our kitchen makeover in spring 2015. I recently shared an update from our kitchen makeover and why I wouldn’t paint my cabinets black again.

Let’s take a look at the family room now and talk about what I would like to do to this space. After we finished the fireplace makeover I knew the rest of the room needed to be updated. The ORC will give me the nudge I need to get the rest of the room looking as amazing as the fireplace.

Here is the fireplace after the recent makeover. I will admit, I am considering painting the white a darker color. Still slightly on the fence but leaning more toward going for it than keeping it white.

I don’t actually have many new photos of the family room because it hasn’t changed in a long time.

I’ve had the same red rug for about 14 years. I tried a different more modern rug early last year but it wasn’t me and I went back to the red. I’m just ready to get the red out of my decor. Maybe touches in accessories but not the big pieces.

I still have the coffee table but it is painted off white and antiqued. I would love a new coffee table as well.

Family Room Sofa

Also, this chair is super comfortable but needs new fabric. That has been one of my harder decisions because finding affordable comfortable fabric is not easy.

Family Room Before One Room Challenge

I’ve painted a few things along the way to try to make things look better but there are some things that really need to be changed, like that ceiling fan. It’s so dated. We are a ceiling fan family so I will be looking for a prettier one to swap out.

  1. I appreciate your comment so much! You are sweet. I am still torn over this decision. I’m posting about it tomorrow on my week 2 update.

  2. I am very excited for you, your bedroom and kitchen were the greatest so we will be waiting! lol!

  3. I don’t usually give my two cents worth, however, I really, really don’t want you to paint the fireplace so I’m making an exception! lol I hope others agree. As I study it in the pictures, the white, in my opinion, pulls the white out of the tile and contrasts with the wall giving the fireplace definition. OK, that’s all on that! I also want you to know I love that coffee table and I wish I had it right this minute. Good luck! Can’t wait to see the results.

  4. Glazing would help give it some depth. Depending on the shade of brown you painted the cabinets you may have to go about 2 shades darker on the glaze. You can always look into lime wax to add a lighter look. It’s a beautiful technique as well. Check out this from DIY Network. Hope this helps. https://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/make-and-decorate/decorating/how-to-transform-furniture-with-creative-paint-applications-pictures?sni_mid=47869&sni_rid=47869.317.345589&nl=DIY_072612_subfeatlink_

  5. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together! I feel you on ceiling fans – ours are outdated too but it’s so hard to find decent ones without spending a fortune. But they are so necessary! Good luck!
