TV Stand Makeover

TV Stand Makeover-Inspired by Dear Lillie Blog-Two Toned Furniture

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do at first but as soon as I saw my inspiration piece I knew I was doing a TV Stand Makeover!

It’s themed furniture makeover day!  If you remember last month I did a decoupaged vanity for my daughter.  This month’s theme was two toned. All of my DIY girls will have their projects linked up at the bottom!

If you have seen any of my room tours on the blog you saw my dresser turned TV stand in those pictures.  I converted it a while back but I have never shared it with you here.  I had lots of before pics but for some reason I can only find one, that was taken with my cell phone in the garage.  BUT you can still see how this piece started out.

I had already painted it with mindful gray and glazed with gauntlet.  Both are Sherwin Williams colors that I really love.  Perfect if you are looking for true gray.  It looked like this…

THEN I saw this picture from Dear Lillie Blog and I fell in love with this furniture piece…

It is so gorgeous! I was immediately inspired to add the yellow to mine giving me the two toned effect for my TV stand makeover. I’m not sure if this piece is painted or if that is a light golden wood but still I love it!!

I knew I could mix some paint to get a similar color and that is exactly what I did.

TV Stand Makeover-Mixing Paint

I had Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Arles.  Which I don’t love until it has dark wax on it.  It is a bit orangey so I added some of the Chalky Finish paint in Lace (white) to make it creamier yellow instead of orange yellow…my technical art skills at work, LOL!

You can see as I was applying the yellow paint the color is not exactly right BUT I know what dark wax does this color.

Now for the wax…fyi, it’s not easy taking a one handed iphone picture while the other hand waxes!

I am loving how it turned out!

  1. I love the make over, I am brand new to your blog and very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
I would try painting the knobs black right over the white and distress slightly. Stunning.

  2. Oh you are making want to pick up my paint brush! I love the two tone look. It truly highlights all the details on your piece.

I would love for you to join me for my Show Me Saturday Linky Party! We go live at 7:00 am EST.

My readers would love this project!

  3. Awesome! Thanks! I was curious if I could use the Olympic one paint. I’ve read that a lot of people do two coats of kilz and then paint with latex, but I think I will give the Olympic a whirl!

  4. I actually sanded the top surface to give it some grip then I painted with a latex paint with primer in it. Sticks really well. For this piece I did use a Sherwin Williams paint color but I had it mixed in Olympic One paint + primer.

  5. Hi, it looks like the piece you painted may have had the laminate coating? I have one I want to paint too. How did you paint it the first time with the Sherwin Williams? Did you prime it? Thanks so much!

  6. I have a question. When you paint a large piece, do you use spray cans, a mechanical paint sprayer or all done by hand (roller bad brush)? I have ling wanted to do my dining room set and turn my garage into a paint booth. I have painted small stuff but nothing this big and I want it nice. Your suggestions please

  7. Sonya, This looks GREAT. What a difference a little pop of color makes. Another great transformation my friend!

  8. I love this. 🙂 I think matte black would work nicely. The white is okay but the black will complement the piece well, just like in the inspiration photo. Go for it!

  9. I love the way your piece turned out – the golden yellow makes all the difference. As for the handles, I vote for black, but…I would accent them with some antique gold Rub n Buff applied with your fingertip. Use very little and you will be amazed that the high spots will be golden and the deep spots will be shadowed black. Try it on something else before you decide!

  10. I agree wtih you Sonya that Arles looks great with dark wax or toned down with some white and it is a perfect accent color on your lovely media cabinet – love the way you added it to the legs as well. This is such a great series that I look forward to every month. You gals are all so talented!
