How to Make a Space Feel Homey
I have always looked forward to helping my adult kids decorate their spaces once they moved away from home. Whether they lived in a college dorm or their own apartment, I love the challenge of figuring out how to make a space feel homey.
This post is sponsored by Wayfair. Where I often shop because I can find excellent products with fast delivery. I was able to order the items and have them shipped to Montana and within a week they had everything.
My son and his fiance just moved to Montana and asked for help with their apartment. Since they will be getting married this year they wanted to get rid of things they have had from college and start with some fresh pieces for their future.

How I start a Design and Decorating Concept
Mood Board is step one. I asked them to send me a photo idea of the look they liked. They sent me a board with a bedroom styled in warm neutral colors and rug styles they liked. They love an earthy color palette. Emily, my soon to be daughter in law, pointed out the type of rug she didn’t like as well.
So I went from there finding the rugs she liked and added in another one to create a color story for their style. You can see how they all work together and will keep an easy flow throughout the apartment. This helps make a space feel homey.
- Transitional Southwestern Fringe Rug (bedroom)
- Modern Abstract Rug (living room)
- Abstract Checked Area Rug (guest room/office)
- Non slip rug tape

Step two is making a plan for the basics. I always start with rugs and then add in something needed for everyday that will add interest to the design. Since this space doesn’t leave room for a dining table, they needed good seating at the bar.
I’ve shared in another post how to select the perfect neutral rug for any room which is always good design skill to know.
The upholstered bar chairs they chose are comfy, give a modern look to the decorating, and add contrast to the open concept space. Adding in some warm tones, like this wood lamp and wood frames help with the coziness.
