Have you ever walked into a room in your home and felt like it just looks a little… tired?
Not messy. Not bad. Just flat. Maybe the light feels dull. Maybe the walls feel heavy. Maybe you’ve styled and restyled shelves and it still isn’t giving you that fresh, pulled-together feeling you’re craving.
Before you buy one more pillow or move another piece of furniture, I want you to pause. Sometimes the solution isn’t adding more. It’s reflecting what you already have.
Mirrors are one of the most underrated tools in DIY decorating. They brighten a space, add depth, and make your home feel more intentional without creating clutter. When used strategically, they can amplify your natural light, highlight your color palette, and help a room feel cohesive instead of mismatched.
The key is knowing where to hang them, how big they should be, and how to choose a style that supports your space instead of competing with it. Let’s simplify it together.
Where to Hang Your Mirror
- Reflect something beautiful.
Always pay attention to what is being reflected in your mirror. If you place a mirror above the mantel it will reflect the light fixture of that space. If its a beautiful chandelier, fine. If there is a ceiling fan and you don’t want to reflect that, your mantel may need art instead of a mirror. - Use mirrors to solve a problem.
Dark hallway? Hang one at the end.
Small living room? Place one across from a window.
Heavy entry wall? Anchor it above a console. - Hang at the right height.
Eye level is your safe starting point. If hanging above furniture, keep it about 6–10 inches above the piece so it doesn’t appear to be floating.

Mirror Sizing Considerations
- Bigger almost always is best.
Small mirrors can feel lost and disconnected unless they are part of a collection or gallery. A larger mirror makes a confident statement and feels intentional. - Follow proportion rules.
Aim for the mirror to be about ½ to ¾ the width of the furniture below it (console, buffet, sofa, etc.). Proportion is easy on the eye and feels right. - Let scale match the room.
High ceilings? Taller mirror.
Narrow wall? Vertical orientation.
Wide wall? Horizontal or oversized round.
How to Choose a Style That Supports Your Space
- Coordinate with your finishes.
Black frames add contrast.
Wood frames add warmth. Light or dark wood mirrors all can work.
Brass adds softness.
The frame should connect to something else in the room. - Use shape strategically.
Round mirrors soften boxy rooms.
Arched mirrors add architectural interest.
Rectangular mirrors feel classic and structured. - Don’t compete with your focal point.
If you already have bold wallpaper, heavy molding, or a statement fireplace, keep the mirror frame simpler.
